Eaton Steel provides conveyor hex steel bar for the making of conveyor rollers. The 1018 and 1045 steel bars are cut to length and put inside the steel tube roller. Each roller has two bearings where the HX axle goes through. We work to ASTM A108 cold-finished bar standard tolerances.
All steel bars are drawn in house at our cold drawn bar mill. We store large stock quantities and source hot rolled steel bars from the most competitive North American sources. We produce prime steel that meets all industry standard requirements, including AISI 1018 and 1045.

How Hex Bar Works in a Conveyor Roller
A hex axle locks into the hex bore of each roller bearing, so the shaft stays fixed in the conveyor frame while the tube spins around it. That fit depends on consistent across-flats size and straightness, which is why conveyor builders specify cold-drawn hex held to ASTM A108 tolerances.

1018 vs. 1045 for Conveyor Axles
- 1018: low carbon steel with good machinability and weldability, the common choice for light and medium duty rollers
- 1045: medium carbon steel with higher strength and hardness, used for heavier loads and longer spans
Do you need Cold Finished or Hot Rolled Bars?
Conveyor Hex Bar Shapes and Sizes
- Hex: Hex bar is the standard axle for gravity and light to medium duty powered roller conveyors. The hex shaft drops into hex-punched holes in the conveyor frame, so it cannot spin and wear out the frame. Hex axles are often spring-loaded, which lets maintenance crews push a roller in and out without tools. Common pairings are 7/16" hex in 1.9" diameter rollers and 11/16" hex in heavier 2.5" rollers.
- Round: Round bar is used where the axle has to be machined, threaded or turned. Typical uses include drilled-and-tapped or threaded axles bolted into heavy-duty frames, drive and idler shafts carrying sprockets or pulleys, and belt conveyor shafts. Round is also the starting stock for many custom axles that are turned down or keyed at the ends.
